Manufacturing

Stephenson Smart has been our accountancy firm for about four years, looking after our payroll, bookkeeping, tax, management accounts and R&D (research and development) tax relief. We employ 18 people, so as a small business it’s important to be able to put our trust in an accountancy firm. We don’t feel like we are a number, we view Chris as an extension to our team. If I had to sum up Stephenson Smart in one word it would be awesome.

FAQS

In any business it is important to ensure accurate record keeping. This the same for the manufacturing and engineering industry. You may be required to keep your records electronically by HMRC, this is something we can advise you on. You may feel that you have the time and skills to undertake this yourself or employ someone to do it in-house. If this is the case, you may still need support with end of year reporting and submissions to ensure that you are paying the right amount of tax.
The simple answer is yes you can. However, the criteria for research and development expenditure to qualify for the tax reliefs available is very stringent. HMRC can be quick to issue compliance checks on any claims put through, so it is always better to speak to a tax specialist first.
